NSS About

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation used to impress upon the student time and again, that they should always keep before them, their social responsibility. He believed that India lives in villages. Hence, he advised them to establish a living contact with the community in whose midst their institution is located. The students should always feel that the problems of villagers are the problem of the country. The University Grants Commission headed by Dr. Radhakrishnan recommended introduction of national service scheme (NSS) in the academic institutions on a voluntary basis with a view to develop healthy contacts between the students and teachers on the one hand and establishing a constructive linkage between the campus and the community on the other hand. In 1958, the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru endorsed the concept of involving the students in community service, besides their academic commitment. The Education Commission headed by Dr. D.S. Kothari (1964-66) recommended that students at all stages of education should be associated with some form of social service. It was impressed upon all the academic functionaries to operationalize the idea of integrating students with community welfare activities. The cardinal principle of the programme is that it is organised by the students themselves and both students and teachers through their combined participation in social service. Thus they get a sense of involvement in the tasks of national development. Besides, the students, particularly, obtain work experience which might help them to find avenues of self-employment or employment in any organisation at the end of their university career.

Jayamukhi Institute of Technological Sciences (JITS) took the cue to give an opportunity to feel the needs of the community in which they live. Hence, JITS had established NSS unit in 2001in collaboration with the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) with the following objectives:

To arouse an awareness among the students about the realities of life,

To carry out the socio-economic surveys in as many villages as possible to find out the problems relating to health, sanitation, adult education, modernization of agriculture, poultry,

To help the orphanages and the physically handicapped people to involve in small scale economic activities so as to raise their economic status.

To deploy the young students in relief work during natural calamities/emergencies such as cyclones, floods, famine, earthquake, tsunamis etc as and when necessary.

To develop a sense of social and civic responsibility among the students.

To utilise their technical knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems

To develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities.

To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes.

To promote national integration and social harmony.

To enable the students to know their heritage and preserve the national monuments in and around the villages.

To inculcate the habit of feeling of the motto of NSS "Not Me But You".

The NSS Unit of this College has adopted the approved logo of NSS of the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple. The NSS logo is embossed on the badge of NSS volunteers.

The NSS Unit of JITS is enrolling the volunteers every year and organizing Regular Camps once in a Week and two Special Camps in year. The regular camps are meant to keep the campus green, pollution free, celebrating the national (international) events, like Yoga Day, Women Empowerment, Road safety etc. The Special Camps are organized in the villages near around the College to organize surveys, eye-care programs, road maintenance, develop team work, leadership qualities etc. So far the College organized ten special camps over the years. The participants in the regular and special camps are given appropriate certificates to affirm their interest in community service apart from their academic activities.
